Like other nickel-based high-temperature alloys,C276 undergoes rapid work hardening during processing. This characteristic allows cold working to significantly increase strength, though intermediate annealing may be required to restore ductility.
Impact Strength:
The alloy maintains excellent toughness at low temperatures, making it suitable for specialized cryogenic chemical processes.
Modulus of Elasticity:
At room temperature, the modulus of elasticity is approximately 29.8 x 10⁶ psi (205 GPa).
Hardening:
Hastelloy C276 cannot be hardened by heat treatment;it is a strictly solution-strengthened alloy that can only gain additional strength through cold working.
The hardness limits for pipes are specified by ASTM B622 (seamless pipe) and ASTM B619 (welded pipe). While most specifications stipulate a maximum hardness of 100 HRB,typical production values for annealed pipe are usually around 87 HRB.
Hardening Method:
Hastelloy C276 is a solution-strengthened alloy that cannot be hardened through heat treatment.Significant hardness increases (up to 20-23 HRC) are achievable only through cold working.
Conversion Reference:
At typical annealed levels,90 HRB roughly converts to approximately 185–191 Vickers hardness (HV).
Hastelloy C276 Pipe Applications

Reactors, heat exchangers, piping for organic chlorides, acid catalysts and aggressive media like formic, acetic and mineral acids.

Sour gas wells (H₂S, CO₂),offshore platforms and equipment exposed to chloride-rich environments(seawater, brine).

Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems,scrubbers,ducts,fans
and stack liners.

Digesters,bleach plants
and equipment for handling corrosive bleaching agents.

Municipal and
industrial waste processing equipment.

Boilers,condensers
and heat exchangers in
challenging conditions.

Why Hastelloy C276 Pipe are Chosen
Universal Corrosion Resistance:
Unmatched resistance to a wide range of chemicals, including ferric and cupric chlorides, chlorine and hypochlorite solutions.
Weldability:
Resists grain boundary precipitation in the weld zone, suitable for as-welded applications.
High Strength & Ductility:
Good mechanical properties, even at elevated temperatures.
