How does the composition of C22 differ from Hastelloy C276?

Although both are commonly used nickel alloys,C22 has a significantly higher chromium content (approximately 22%, compared to only 16% in C276).This makes C22 more effective in oxidizing environments (such as those containing nitric acid or wet chlorine),while C276 is better suited for strict reducing conditions.

Why is the low Carbon content critical for seamless pipes?

To minimize carbide precipitation within the heat-affected zone (HAZ) during welding,carbon content is restricted to below 0.015%.This enables Hastelloy C22 seamless steel pipe to be used directly in its “as-welded” condition for most chemical process applications without compromising its corrosion resistance.

Can the strength of C22 pipes be increased?

Yes.Although C22 steel pipes are typically supplied in the annealed condition,higher strength can be achieved through cold working,though this will reduce their natural hardness.

How does C22 compare to Hastelloy C276 in strength?

The mechanical properties of the two alloys are very similar.C276 typically exhibits a slightly higher ultimate tensile strength,but C22 offers superior formability and weldability,making it easier to fabricate into complex piping structures.

Manufacturing Process for Seamless Hastelloy C22 Pipe

The manufacturing process for seamless Hastelloy C22 (UNS N06022) pipe is more complex than that for standard stainless steel,primarily relying on cold working to ensure tight dimensional tolerances and superior corrosion resistance.

Billet Preparation

Electric arc furnace (EAF) melting is typically employed,followed by argon-oxygen decarburization (AOD) refining.For C22 grades with high-quality requirements,an additional electric slag remelting (ESR) or vacuum arc remelting (VAR) process is usually incorporated to eliminate impurities.The refined round billets are then cut to predetermined lengths.

Hot Piercing / Extrusion

First,the pipe blank is heated to approximately 1100°C – 1200°C.Then,solid billets are processed into hollow blanks using a slant rolling piercing machine or an extruder.This is the core step in achieving the pipe’s “seamless” characteristic.

Cold Working

Cold Pilgering:
Rotational rolling of tubular material using a ring die,significantly reducing wall thickness while improving surface finish.
Cold Drawing:
Forming tubular material by drawing it through a die,suitable for producing small-diameter or ultra-thin-walled tubes.

Solution Annealing

C22 must be annealed at temperatures above 1121°C (2050°F).The purpose is to relieve internal stresses induced by cold working,re-dissolve alloying elements uniformly,and prevent precipitation of harmful intermetallic phases (such as μ-phase).Rapid water quenching or air cooling must follow annealing to ensure optimal corrosion resistance.

Pickling & Cleaning

Use an acid pickling solution composed of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid to remove scale formed during annealing,restoring the surface to a passivated state.

Finishing & Testing

As a stainless steel pipe & tube manufacturer with over a decade of experience,we ensure the straightness of our pipes.Prior to shipment,we conduct inspections including eddy current testing (ET),ultrasonic testing (UT),or hydrostatic testing to detect internal defects.Finally,pipes are marked and packaged for shipment in accordance with ASTM B622 standards.
